Poor Meg

There's just not much more you can say......poor, poor Meg. I went to see her last week to report how things were going. Well, the last program just didn't do well. So she says we'll just trash it all and start fresh. We worked and we worked and we worked, on and on and on. Nothing was good. Nothing was even somewhat good. Finally she went back to an old program and built from there. Still.....(well you know what's coming)......not good. My appointment was for an hour, but we worked for an hour and a half, however now I'm taking up somebody else's time. And the thing was, we really weren't getting anywhere. So she gave me a program, something to try, and I've got a 2 hour appointment for the middle of May. So far this program is not good either. I know this is very frustrating for her. This far into the game, I should not be having these issues. But this is the joy of being Cherri! So, I need y'all to be saying prayers that we can find something that works well for me. I need a good, good program!!

The First Annual Lexington Half Marathon

It came......and it went! Right now, I'm glad it's over. It's just a few hours post-race and my body is feeling every step! Of course yesterday was a beautiful day. Today's forecast called for rain and wind. They sure weren't wrong this time!! Why oh why could they not have gotten it wrong??! It started raining on the drive over to the farm. Well, if you wanted to call that a drive. Probably took us an hour to go about a mile. When we got on Newtown Pike, the traffic was not moving. Time kept passing, but we weren't getting anywhere. Twenty minutes before the race was to start and we were still quite a ways away. The only consolation was that there were LOTS of people behind us. And when we finally got to the farm, we had to park back in the boonies. We were hoping they would delay the starting time. Since this was the first half marathon for Lexington, you have to figure there would be glitches. So, we park and take off walking real fast. Went straight to the porta-potties and when we came out, we heard the gun go off for the race to begin! Again we book it over to where we saw a "Start" banner. All the runners were coming right at us!! We had to book it the other direction and find the end of the line!! Off we went!! It rained on us the entire way. And the wind blew.....and blew..... However, we kept on trotting along. About 4 miles into it, I went right through standing water, so not only were my shoes and socks wet, now they were soaked through and through!! Rick and I did pretty good until about mile 10. Then the fatigue really hit. We started doing some walk/running at that point. Then at about mile 11.5 or 12, my back seized up!! I had to walk for a while and there were 2 or 3 times from there to the finish that I wasn't even sure I would be able to continue on to the end!! But we ran some and walked some. I told Rick I would have to shoot myself if I got to 1/2 mile of the finish line and could not make it in!! But things calmed down and I was able to finish up running. WOOHOO!!! My time was 2:39:36. Not fabulous, but hey!....I finished!! I had hoped it would be a little bit better, but considering the conditions, it wasn't too bad. The wind the last 3 miles or so, was HORRIBLE!! Because I wasn't constantly running the last couple of miles, I started getting chilly willy. I was soaked through and through and the wind was blowing.......niiiiiice. Then afterwards, we stood around talking to friends, got a snack, stayed for the awards......so, I got even colder. When we finally got back to the car, I was an ice cube!! I didn't think I would ever get warm. When we got home, I was literally shaking all over. I got the wet clothes off and got under a blanket. Rick made me some hot chocolate. :-) It probably took an hour and a half for the cold to leave my body.

It was an experience! I'm glad I did it, but it really was tough. I asked Rick what he thought our time would be next year!! :-) I have to work hard and improve so I can do much better a year from now! That shouldn't be too tough......I don't have to improve a whole lot to get a better time.....this year was pretty slow!!!

I'll take a couple of days to relax (I think my leg muscles are about to set-up as we speak!!), then it will be time to start training for the next one!! As I said before, I'm thinking heavily about doing the Hatfield-McCoy Half Marathon!! WOOHOO!!!

Half Marathon!!!

I can't believe it's actually time for the first Lexington Half Marathon!! AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!! Yes, that's exactly how I feel. I'm getting a little bit of the pre-race jitters. Can I do it? Well sure......provided nothing bad happens. Lately I have been having some issues with my knees, so hopefully they won't act up. But I want to be able to run it strong and feeling good! I want to bounce across the finish line! Not have to drag myself, crawling on my hands and knees! And hopefully it won't take me forever to run the course. I'm slow. That's just the way things are. I've not been doing this long enough to get fast yet. I hope in my old age I'm still able to pick up some speed!! I believe I will do the Half in about 2 hours and 30 minutes.....something in that range. I guess we'll see soon enough! The race is Sunday morning at 8:00. I sure hope we have nice weather! No rain! Sunshine!!

A few weeks ago when we did 13 miles during our group training runs, I thought I was going to die!!!!! It was a horrible run. Well, I actually ended up walking a goodly portion during the last 3 or 4 miles. It was bad. I had no energy. No umph! No nothing!! My friend Cyndi (and running partner on these long runs) was just bouncing along! I wanted to smack her upside her head. I finally got her to go on and let me crawl back to our starting spot. I PRAY the race is not like that. However, a couple of weeks later I did a 9 mile run -- and we actually did it over part of the Half Marathon course. That run was great!! I felt good, ran strong, never felt like I couldn't make it. It was a really good run!! I PRAY the race is more like that!!

I've never done a big race like this......just a couple of 5Ks. So I'm excited to be a part of the crowd, the enthusiasm, the excitement! I just hope I'm not the last one coming in. :-(

I have to give a GREAT BIG shout out for our running group and mostly for our leader, Ernie! If it had not been for the group, there's no way I would be able to do the Half. Ernie got the group started, gave us spreadsheets of training runs to do during the week, dished out advice, led the group runs on Saturdays, all in all, he's been a great leader! There's no way I would have been out there running in 15 degree weather, in the snow on those cold dark Saturday mornings if it wasn't for the group. It really has been a looooong cold winter. But because of that stupid spreadsheet that Ernie gave me, showing the runs I was to do, I felt I had to get out there and run! I greatly appreciate all that he has done to get us ready for the race!! I will still continue to run with the group on Saturdays and hope to train for another half. I'm thinking about doing the Hatfield-McCoy Half Marathon. I think it's appropriate since I'm part of the Hatfield clan! GO HATFIELDS!!!

The Good and The Bad

Well, I went to see my good buddy Meg this morning. I KNOW that poor girl has to groan when she gets out of bed on the mornings that she knows I'll be coming in for an appointment. I feel for her!!

She put me in the booth today. I knew it was coming. At my last appointment, she looked back in my chart and saw that it had been quite a while since I made a trip to the booth. So I knew I would be taking that fateful walk! I hate the booth. Everybody does!! Well, that would be everybody except those with perfect hearing. AND if you have perfect hearing you would not be going into the booth!

So, to the booth I go! First she did the tones, then sentences, then single words, then more sentences. With the tones, I'm right around the "normal" line. That's great! Prior to my CI, most of those tones I didn't even hear.

We'll jump over to the single words category. I did better than last time! She was impressed with the single words!! Most people don't do so well with those. But I improved. Yay for me! HOWEVER, with the sentences, I regressed (is that the right word?)! Did not do as good. Got worser. You getting the idea? It wasn't horrible, but totally not expected. Really threw Meg for a loop!! Last time I got 86%. This time it was something like 77%. Meg can't figure out why. It doesn't make any sense. Usually people will do better with the sentences and have a harder time with the words. But you must understand......we are talking about Cherri......Cherri definitely does not fall into the "normal" category.

So she tweaked some more. Not sure what to try, but try something different! She upped some things and put some more high tones in there to see if that helps. I have issues with the real high tones. Those are the last 2 electrodes on the implant. Usually when she turns those on and sends a "beep" through, I don't actually hear it, but I feel it!! It causes me some real pain at the base of my skull. It's just too much for my nerves. They can't handle it. Today, I didn't have the pain in that area, but got some across my forehead! That was a first!! But she did put some more high tones in there, just not the ones that would cause me pain. She didn't want to overload me. Ain't she a sweet thang!? So we'll try this and see what happens!

On another note, Advanced Bionics is doing a trial with a new program they are hoping to come out with. It's called Clear Voice. They are only doing trials with certain hospitals. Well, I asked Meg and UK is one of them!! Shocked me!! So I asked about the possibility of being a participant. Once everything is cleared with the FDA and they can begin the trials, I should be in that group! I'm excited about that! Clear Voice is a new program that is suppose to really help with noise. All CI users have issues with noise and I really don't do well in a noisy environment. So I can't wait to see how this goes! I hope and pray that it will be a great improvement!

So, that's the latest. When you're having a moment with God, remember to put in a good word for me!! Maybe He'll smile down on me a little extra!! :-)

The Camera

That Was Fun

I would say that most everybody knows about Rick and his finger. For the person or two this side of the Rockies who hasn't heard, Rick tried his best to get rid of a finger....or at least part of one. While at work Wed morning, he was up in the air in one of those bucket/lift thingies cutting a pipe. He had both hands on the saw, but the bucket dropped a little and he grabbed the rail with his left hand...therefore the saw dropped and sliced through part of his left middle finger. He was taken to St. Joseph East where one of the best hand surgeons magically appeared. They took him right into surgery to reattach the finger. The doctor told me it was hanging by a thread. Apparently there are pictures.....not sure I want to see them. I guess we'll have that option when we go back to the doctor next Wed. He had to prepare the bone (not sure what that means), then reattach muscles, tendons and artery. Niiiiiice. I mean, if you're going to chop your finger, you might as well do a good job of it! Thank the Good Lord it was just a finger. He could have very well sliced off his hand.

At this point it seems to be healing nicely. Only the very tip end is showing, but he has feeling in that part, so that is a good sign. The doctor did say that it would never be the same. He probably won't be able to bend it at the top knuckle. Oh well, the boy will just have to make due!

He has had quite a bit of pain to go along with it. And of course, night time is the worse. It hurts and he absolutely freezes at night. He hasn't gotten much sleep for the past 2 nights. But tonight we are armed with an electric blanket!! Hopefully that will take care of the freezing part. His pain medicine is on schedule to be taken right at bedtime, so that will help too. Pain medicine is a good, good thing!!

He has been at Toyota for 20 years and this is his first major accident. He's had several close calls, but thank goodness has never been severely hurt. I hope this is the one and only!! Maybe they should think twice about letting the boy operate a power tool!

A Hard 9 Miles!

This past Saturday we did a 9 mile run. Thankfully the weather was nicer....about 35 degrees and thank goodness, no snow! We met at a different spot. It was out in the country.....beautiful spot, lots of land, farms, some big houses, cows...all in all, a gorgeous place to run. HOWEVER, the whole thing was up and down and up and down....but it felt like it was up and up and up and down and up and up..... You get the idea. I didn't think I would be able to do it. Hills are not my friends!! The slightest little incline just wipes me out and ahead of me were these 40-11 hills!

Well, before we left the house that morning, I checked my email. I always look to see if there's any last minute emails from the Striders (the group we run with) or from Cyndi (a friend and fellow runner). No emails from either. However, I get a daily email from K Love's Encouraging Word. I just happened to go ahead and opened it up. Good thing!! I really needed it!! The word of the day was:

The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace.

While I was out there running, I couldn't remember the exact wording but I knew it said the Lord would give me strength and bless me. Believe me, I was quoting that to myself about 50 million times!! Praying for strength! Praying for the road to flatten out! I needed a good blessing!

I made the 9 miles. They were killers!! The last couple of hills I had to walk up, but that was ok. I still got those 9 miles in!! And ran a bazillion hills in the process! The Lord did give me strenth and blessed me!! Thank the Good Lord!!

A Fun Day With A Friend

My friend Kerri and I decided to forego Christmas presents this past Christmas and instead plan a day together. We had that day yesterday. We started off with lunch at Saul Good. It was fabulous!! I had only eaten there once and Kerri had not eaten there at all. If you are in the Lexington area, GO!! It is soooooo good!! We split a Southwestern Dip with Blue Corn Chips appetizer. YUM!!! Not at all what I was expecting. It was TOO GOOD!! Then we had Saul's Veggie Pizza. Another YUM!!! Topped it off with Bananas Foster Waffle. Oh my gosh!!!!! Everything was way too good! Makes me want to go back real, real soon. Afterwards we rolled ourselves out the door, headed over to Hamburg shopping center. We went to HH Gregg, Kohl's and Bed Bath & Beyond. After we shopped around for a while, it was movie time!! I never, ever go to the movies, but the captioned movie was It's Complicated and it looked funny. We really enjoyed the movie and the laughs! However, I got a small popcorn and a large diet coke......it cost me $11.50!!! That is not a misprint!! $11.50!!!! That should not be legal!! I won't do that again. I just about fell over!

We had a great and fun day!! I much prefer this kind of Christmas present instead of something I really don't need. Spending time with a friend and having fun is the BEST!!

Running in the Snow

Where were you at 7am on this Saturday morning? I was with our running group out in the frigid cold gearing up for what I thought would be a 9 mile run. Two things to be thankful for.....it originally was suppose to be about 5 degrees this morning and it ended up being 15, so that was nice! I was very thankful for that extra 10 degrees! Then found out that Ernie, our running group leader --- that would be The Ern Dawg, or The Great Running High Priest as he is affectionately called --- had decided that we would only do 6 instead of the 9. The massive thankfulness for that one came a little later on. At first I was thinking why shorten our run? Last Saturday the temperature was about the same and the road where we were starting out was clear....so why?? Well, about 10 minutes into the run I understood why. All those side roads that we were running on had not been cleared of the snow. Nooooo boy. Within a few seconds of running in the snow I felt the total difference a little snow can make! It wore me out quickly!! I was thinking there's no way I could even do 6!!! Well, we trudged on, had to take a couple of walk breaks, but made it through the 6. Man, I was glad when that was over!!

If the roads had been cleared it would have been a very nice run. It was beautiful out there, very peaceful and calm. The squirrels were out playing and having a big 'ol time!! However, I spent most of the time carefully planning where I was going to plant my foot! Had to be careful not to slip and break my tooshie! I was constantly scanning the road to try to find a spot with the least snow. I'm telling you....running in the snow is hard, HARD work!! It's like running in very soft sand. Now, if I'm going to run in something soft like that, I would much prefer that it be sand and not snow!!

Afterwards we all did go to Doodles and get some breakfast! That's the best part of the Saturday morning runs!!

Treadmill Update

I have a renewed HATRED for that treadmill!!! A true hatred!!

It started out nice enough. I was actually a little excited about giving it a try again. I mean I got to put on shorts, a sleeveless tech shirt, hair was a mess, make up a mess, I dragged the boombox in there......yes folks, didn't hook up to the IPod...used an old fashioned boombox!!! Anyway, picked out some tunes, opened the window and turned it on!! The first 7 minutes were good because I walked a half mile to warm up and while doing so, I was boogeying to Play That Funky Music! At times it can get difficult, but you can dance and walk on the treadmill at the same time! Then it was time to start running my 3 miles. At this point, I'm thinking I may even do a little more and run 4 miles. Within a few minutes the dislike started. I was bored out of my mind....even with the music. I had nothing to look at but the wall or the treadmill read-out....which seemed to never move!!!!! Then I was sweating up a storm. Had to stop and open the window all the way. Ran a while longer and had to stop to turn off the music. By this time I'm just irritated with it. Back on for a while, then had to walk for a minute cause I was going to hurl. Finally finished the run. I thought 3 miles would never, EVER end!!

I have no desire to get back on that thing! None!! I'll just brave the elements and run outside, or hit the gym. It was AWFUL!!

Oh well, the good thing is that it is over. Now I have to gear up for a 9 mile run early Saturday morning in the frigid cold. Yes, right now they're talking single digits. Not sure how that will go. Stay tuned......I'll let you know!

Inside or Outside?

It looks like we're finally getting some snow. Maybe after this we'll get some balmy weather!! I can always hope. The big question of the day is where to run? I need to do a 3 miler, but just don't know what I want to do. Well, I do know I would rather be outside than inside. Because of the snowy roads I won't be going to the gym, so it's either hit the pavement or use the treadmill.

First off, let me just say, I HATE the treadmill!! It is so boring! You just stand in one place and stare at one spot!! If the weather is bad and I do my running at the gym, I always run the track, which is spot #2 for don't-care-to-run-that. Round and round and round and round..... To do a mile on our track is 7 1/2 laps around. So I have to keep count on my fingers. Sometimes I don't know if I counted that lap or not!! I have to remember to move another finger!! Also, the back part of the lap is all windows, so right now that part is very cool (which is niiiiice), but once you pass the windows you hit a wall of heat. It's downright painful after a few laps! It's like getting hit in the face with a hot brick!! So I don't really care for the track either, but I can do that easier than the treadmill.

I have to say I have this big ol' nice treadmill in my house that I bought several years ago thinking I would use it. Riiiiight! I actually forget I have it. Last night, while pondering my run for today, it literally hit me.....I mean the light bulb went on that I have this treadmill right here! If the weather is too nasty, I don't have to go far to get in a run. Well, I swannie!!

But I'm still wondering whether to head out or use that dern treadmill. I would much rather be outside. The temps aren't bad for running, but I don't want to fall and break something. As long as it's not icy, it probably would not be too bad. I'd just have to be a little more careful. I couldn't be running those 6 minute miles!! HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!! But....since I only need to do 3 miles.....and since I remembered I do have that thing up in the corner room, I may just get on it and see what happens. At least I won't have to get bundled up. I can put on some shorts and a t-shirt. That part is nice!! Ok.....I think that is what I'll do. I figure I'll be freezing my tooshie off later on when we go outside to play in the snow with the girls. Getting bundled up once for the day is enough!

Ooooohhhhh, I can't wait for spring!!!

It's A New Year and A New Look!

Yes, it's 2010! I've not been around for a while, but Cynthia got me inspired with a new look, so I guess I need to write some words!

There's just not been too much to tell about my implant. We've went through a kind of rough patch. Trying new things that just did not work. So, for several months I had programs that were bad,....some were very bad! But we are finally on the right track again! Meg tried a different approach and it is working much better. I may just have to come to grips with the idea that things will never be as good as I would like them to be. Now, I'm not complaining......my hearing is much better than before! However, of course I would like things to be GREAT!! And that will probably be a hope I'll always have, but unless a miracle takes place, with my type of hearing loss and the technology right now, I may have to settle for good. Oh well, good is better than bad!!

Don't Be Scared!!!!!!!

Yes! I actually am going to mosey over here and lay down a few words! Since last we spoke.....

At my March 14 appointment with Meg, she stuck me in the booth to see how I measured up at the one year mark. We all know how much I love the booth!! However, it is nice to see how much things have changed. With the sentences, I got 35 out of 52 words correct, for a score of 67%. There were 3 sentences that I got completely right. For the word list (which is much harder), I got 11 out of 25 right, which is 44%. I got 47 out of 75 phonemes (partial words), which is 63%. Coming right along! This is a big improvement from the way things were before!

We keep making changes and some of them I just don't like. Sometimes it seems like things are not as good as they were at a previous time. So we keep trying this and trying that! About a month ago, Meg was trying different tones that corresponded with certain electrodes. There were some high pitches, which are the last electrodes, that I actually felt before I heard them! It set off a pain in my head! She thinks it's possible that I may have never heard in those ranges and therefore the nerve and my brain are having a hard time processing them. So, she set me up with a program that cut off the last 2 electrodes and another program that cut off the last 3. I had to see how that worked. Plus, she left the current program that I had been using.

I couldn't really say which of the 2 programs I liked better (with the electrodes cut off), but after using those for a while, I switched back to my original program (with all electrodes firing) and really noticed a difference! The original was worser!!! Yes, worser!! It really did kind of shock me.

So, back to Meg I went last Friday. We are now trying the program with the last 2 'trodes cut off. AND she stuck be back in that da-gone booth!! This time I got 49 out of 57 words which is 86%!!! WooHoo!! I got 7 of the sentences completely right! So, things are still improving! However, for the single word test, things have not changed much. For the words, I had 44% and 69% for the phonemes. She said we need to work on increasing some of the low tones without them taking over the other frequencies. I guess we'll be working on that later.

She has given me homework. Oh, I love homework. Rick has to read to me while I follow along. We need to do this most days of the week for at least 15 minutes. Then, after about 3 weeks, I am to listen only.....no following the words. This helps me work on my hearing skills. The more practicing I do, the better things should get.

So, that's where we are right now. I don't go back to Meg for 3 months, unless I feel the need to. If I don't like this program or feel that something needs to be changed, then I give her a buzz and she'll work on me some more! Poor Meg. I do feel sorry for the poor girl.

Happy Anniversary to Me!! Happy Anniversary to Me!! Happy Anniversary to Meeeeeeee!! Can you believe it has been one year since my surgery??!!! Wow! Where does the time go??

Of course I get asked how things are going. But also if I am happy I had the surgery. Do I regret having the surgery? Would I do the other ear?

Things are going very well. YES I’m happy I had the surgery! No regrets whatsoever. But no plans to do the other ear at this time.

I can truly say that I am very happy I had the cochlear implant surgery. I hear so much more than I used to be able to. It still amazes me sometimes the things I hear. Things I could not hear a year ago. But (there’s always a “but,” isn’t there), I am not where I had hoped I would be. I really thought I would be hearing much better by this time....being able to pick up more things, more words, more music, going to movies without captioning.....I know that things will continue to change and continue to get better. I’m not disappointed, I just had high hopes! One day those things may come.....but then again, they may not.

It’s still an exciting journey!!! At this time I have no plans to do the other ear. That ear picks up the bass sounds that my implant is not getting. The two ears work together pretty good. I think if I took away my regular ear I would not hear as well. So, for the time being, I’ll just stay the way I am. Also, it used to be so weird....I would definitely hear from a particular ear. It was very divided....but kind of cool too! It was like I would hear some stuff from one ear and other things from the other ear. Now, things just blend. I guess my brain has adapted and decided to put the two sounds together. Works for me! However, I can still tell what I’m hearing from which ear, but I have to think about it and pay attention. As I’m strolling through my day, I don’t have 2 sided hearing anymore.

I know things are still gradually changing, but they come on slowly and I don’t really notice them until one day I realize that Hey! I didn’t use to be able to hear that! Or I notice that something has a better sound. Such as music. Music has a looooooooooooong ways to go!…but it is much better than it used to be. I get more variance and more of a tune. A lot will depend on the song. Is it a song with lots of “noise” or more of a simple song without a lot going on? But it just hit me today that not too long ago I wasn’t getting any of it at all. It’s just a sloooooooooooow process....at least for me. I am so jealous of the other folks who get hooked up and can hear so quickly. You know...they kind of tick me off!!! :-)

So, all in all it’s been great! There are still things we need to work on and things that need to be changed. I go back to Meg in a couple of weeks for another tweaking. We’ll have to see what needs to be switched around. I’m also sure there will be testing done. She’ll put me in that booth!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! I hate the booth!!! But after it’s all done, it’s cool to see the changes on paper. So, I’ll let you know what I find out.....it could be good, it could be bad, it could be downright U G L Y!!!!

I would have to encourage anyone who has a bad hearing problem to consider a cochlear implant. It can really change your life! Get evaluated, do the research, talk to the doctor, talk to those who have one, but really ponder the idea!!

Is That Bass I Hear??

Yes!! Oh My!! I have probably mentioned in a previous post somewhere, but just to make sure, I'll rehash. I don't hear bass sounds with my implant. For me to explain it doesn't really make a lot of sense. I can tell a man's voice and things like that, but if a truck rumbles by, I don't hear the rumble. Well, not with my implant. Where I really notice it is with music. With my regular ear, I do hear the bass sounds so therefore I know it's there and I know I'm not getting it with my implant. This is one of those things that Meg has tried to straighten out, but it's just not been happening.

Well, on my way home this evening, I put in a Barry Manilow cd. Don't you just love Barry??!!!! Anyway, I'm listening to see if music is getting any better. I was a little shocked!!! I thought I picked up some of the bass!! So I plugged up my regular ear, ran back the cd and listened again..........YES!!! It was there!! No, it still doesn't sound real bass-y, but I'm picking it up!! Usually, it's just not there. If it's a bass guitar playing, I just don't hear a thing with my implant. But it's starting to come through!!! WOOHOO!!!! I need to let Meg know....she will be sooooo excited!!!

Then I threw in some Billy Joel.....got some bass there too!!! Life is good!

Hopefully it will keep getting better and HOPEFULLY one day I'll really hear music the way it's suppose to be. I'm headed in that direction!!

I'm Rested.....Well, Somewhat

Ok, let's see....what's been going on. Oh heck, it's been 3 whole months!! How in the world am I suppose to remember??!!! I don't remember what I had for lunch! And I have to look down to know what I wore today. It's really very sad.

Well, while we were at the beach (oh man, that was soooooooooooooooooo long ago!!), I did hear the whoosh whoosh of the waves. But let me say, we barely spent any time at the beach! We only spent one afternoon hanging out at the beach and the whole time we were playing in the sand with the girls. I literally had to stop for a moment to see what I heard. I was too busy with the girls!! Then later in the week, while riding bikes, we rode down the beach. Man, oh man, how I miss being there!! I should have taken more time to realize exactly what I heard. Maybe I need to go back!!!

On another day of bike riding, we were traveling down one of those beautiful lanes. You know, the winding road, the big trees making a canopy, the big southern clubhouse that looked like a plantation home.....it was absolutely beautiful!!! Anyway, while moseying down the lane, I heard a weird noise. Asked Rick what it was and he said a crow in the trees!

I can't remember much else from the trip. If something comes to mind I'll let you know!

In December Meg wanted me to come in for a "special" appointment when the Advanced Bionics rep came through. She passes by every few months and will see people who have issues to see if she can help with the programming. Well, we all know I am issue laden!!! So, in I go. Poor Rick missed this appt and he would have loved it! There were the 2 audiologists from UK, 2 women from AB and another girl.....not sure who she was. They hooked me up and they tried this and they tried that and how about this, no try that.....on and on and on. The AB rep says we need to try different things, push the limits, see what happens. So, when I left there, I had a new program. Rick says he could tell right off that I wasn't understanding things as well. When they change a program, and especially when there are big changes, the brain has to adjust. So, it took a few weeks, but I was hearing better again! A woman at work even mentioned that she could tell I was hearing better.

One person that I really have a hard time with is our sweet little pastor at church. For some reason he is very hard for me to understand. But finally a few weeks ago he started coming in much clearer!! Woohoo!! For 2 Sundays, I caught pretty much everything he said!! But then.........you know, there's always a "but." I went back to Meg last week for another tweaking. She didn't change a whole lot (I think), but expanded a few things. Well, this Sunday I didn't understand Jon as well again. I caught some things here and there, but missed a lot. Hopefully he'll be coming in clear again before too long!! Love that little fellow!!

Oh! I got one of those singing Christmas cards for Cynthia and Adam. I can never really "hear" those things......and music is still bad, but anyway, I got one that had the song Feliz Navidad in it. Well, lo and behold, I could hear the whole thing!! Come on now....EVERYBODY sing!!.....Feliz Navidad..bum, bum, bum, bum....Feliz Navidad, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, Feliz Navidad blah, blah, blah, blah......not sure what the words are. You get the idea. I love that song. It makes me dance!!

Is there anything else? Probably so. I'm trying to remember 3 months worth!

Another thing, since my last tweaking, I'm catching a few words of people's conversations around me at work. (I'm trying to listen to the guy that sits in the next cubicle over!) Or listen to people in the walkway. I'll catch a word here and a word there. Normally I don't catch anything! Soon I'll be eavesdropping on all the juicy conversations!!!

I've made a couple of phone calls to set up doctor's appointments. Yes, I was nervous, but I did good! Woohoo, watch me go!!!

So, things are still coming along. I have a looooooong ways to go, but improvements are still happening and will continue for a long time to come.

So, Jennifer and kids, and everybody else hanging around this blog, please keep me in your prayers! Don't give up on me!!

Fabio, Fabio, Where For Art Thou Fabio!?

Friends.......well, I thought I had some, but there I was at the beach......been there for 3 months now.....stuck in a rip tip!!! Striving to stay afloat. Trying to survive. Did anybody pull me in to shore?? Oh nooooooooooo. At one point I thought I saw Fabio pass by......I screamed...FAAAABIO......FAAAAABIO...... He didn't even glance over. So, as usual, I had to save myself. Took me 3 months but here I am. Once I catch my breath, I'll let you know how things are going.

Going To The Beach!!!

Yes!!! Wheeeeee doggies!! We are headed to the beach!! We are going to Hilton Head for some fun in the sun, run my toes through the sand, frolic in the waves and just generally have a big ol' time!! We'll also meet up with some life long friends that we've not seen in quite a while......The Cochranes. They are the best....the greatest....and absolutely total loons!! We can't wait to spend some time with them.

Keegan and Romy will be there too, so we'll be playing on the beach with them. They have no clue what's ahead. They will be so much fun!!

I'm really anxious to see what I hear out on the beach. I'm hoping I'll pick up some good whoosh, whoosh!!! Maybe hear some birds. I don't know what else.....does a crab make noise????

Hopefully I'll have a really good update for you when we get back. Please say a prayer that we'll have a safe and fun trip.

Just For You Jennifer!!

Well, I hope my links have made you happy Jennifer!! It's ALL about pleasing you and Cynthia. That's what gives my life meaning.

Just a quick note while I'm here. Yesterday, Rick, Sylvester and I were sitting on the couch. Rick was dozing in and out while Sylvester and I watched tv. Every so often I would hear some weird noise......Sylvester heard it too. He would lift his head and look. Of course I had no clue what it was. Finally, at one point, the noise happened while Rick was back in-the-moment with us. I said What IS that???? It was driving me crazy. Well, it was the buzzer on the dryer. I didn't know the dryer was going.....Rick had turned it on. But it kept buzzing every so often......buzz.......buzz.......buzz.......buzz........buzz........ You would think I would go upstairs and turn it off, but noooooooooo. That required too much effort!!! I just kept hearing that irritating buzzzzzz until it finally cut off.

That's it. That's all I have today.

Plop, Plop, Fizz,...

Fizz, oh what.....Oh, never mind. Wrong thing. Sorry. All I need is the "fizz, fizz" part. Friday, I was sitting at work with nothing to do. It was very quiet because there was hardly anybody at work. We had a 3 day weekend ahead and apparently the majority of the crew decided to make it a 4 day weekend! Anyhoo, I got a Diet Pepsi to drink and poured it in a cup on some ice. I started hearing something weird.....not very loud,....but what was it? AH HA!!!! It was the fizzy part going sssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!! I haven't caught that one before! That was pretty cool!! I had to pour more Pepsi on so I could hear it again!! Just thought you might want to know that.

Not much else going on. We've had a good weekend! Hope everybody else did too. Saturday, Rick's brother and sister-in-law, Buddy and Janelyn, came down to visit. It was great getting to spend some time with them!!! Sunday, after church, we got a lot of yard work done and it looks so much better. Then today, we've been over to Cyn's most of the day. We got a couple of Papa Murphy's pizzas and played a card game, Head and Foot, all afternoon. It's been a fun day!! Of course, we had to play with the girls too! If you haven't tried Papa Murphy's pizzas, you really need to. They are fabulous!!

Oh, by the way, those snide little remarks are just soooooo cute, Cynthia and Jennifer........
